5 Days new

So far, so great!!!

Been keeping up with my long list of to-do's & now with Garrick back at work full-time this week, things are rolling! :)

We're getting Baylee on a somewhat decent sleep schedule, but for a less than a week old, it's never easy. Although, last night I was only up with her 4 times, compared to the two nights before when I was up with her 8+ times.

She's a pretty good baby & hasn't taken up too much of my time so far, which is good because the kids demands, laundry, cleaning & meal requirements never end! :)

Here is a picture of Baylee from yesterday... She was 5 days new here!

Preston has been the best... most loving & attentive BIG brother!!!

And a somewhat cheesy shot of the kids together - this is the first decent picture of all three. Garrick & I sit around and look at all of them and say, "Wow.... we made all these people" Hahaha...
It's trippy that we have three kids!
(Oh, and I didn't dress Aubree in that fancy dress - she just wears clothes like this on a daily basis & dresses herself 100% - it cracks me up when she puts on dresses like this just to sit around the house in!)

Happy "Birth" Day Baylee

Baylee Mary-Anne Javidi
September 21, 2011
6:54pm
6 pounds 10.9 ounces
20 inches long

And.... her birth story, with lot's of pictures to follow.

On Tuesday, September 20th I had a follow-up ultrasound to check on Baby Baylee's kidney disorder. Based on the ultrasound, they found that there had been no improvement, her kidney was still swollen & backing up. In addition, my blood pressure had spiked - concerning my Dr. that I could have the beginning signs of Preeclampsia & because of Baylee's kidney disorder, he didn't want to take any chances of her becoming stressed, something that could lead to potentially damaging her kidney. He told me that I was in a favorable place to be induced & that he wanted it done ASAP. Tomorrow.

Of course, I was initially crushed... as I had, more than ever wanted to have a 100% natural child birth experience, plus a FALL baby and now neither of these things would, or could happen. Of course, I had to set these things aside... for the benefit of Baby Baylee. I came home & didn't know where to start! I hadn't even packed my hospital bag, or finished folding Baylee's clean clothes. I had wanted to do so much before this day arrived, I just hadn't had the energy. So, with the help of Garrick, I managed to throw some things in a bag, clean the house up a bit, and most importantly... RELAX! My OBGYN actually TOLD me to have a glass of red wine, eat something spicy & take a nice long bath the night before (in the hope that the labor would start relatively fast if he just broke my water the next morning).

I didn't sleep well at all, knowing the hard work my body would have to do, the following day. I laid in bed from 4am on... just wondering how the events of that day would go, what this baby would look like & what the results of her medical condition would be. I got up early & took a nice long bath & watched the sunrise. When I called the hospital to see if they were ready for me at 7am, they told me that they had so many women in labor at the moment (and that my Dr. had already delivered 2 babies that day), they told they would call when they were ready for me, between 9-10... So, we waited. I spoke to my Dr. a couple times & right at 9, I got the call - they were ready for me.

Garrick & I got the kids ready & hoped for the best, knowing that we had pretty limited childcare options & that there was a good chance I'd be laboring & delivering on my own. We got in - they gave me the room that Catherine Zeta-Jones had delivered her daughter in (something the hospital seems to pride themselves on - I think :)), got registered & waiting for my Dr. He was planning on coming in, breaking my water & letting my body react. However, once he got there, he realized I wasn't ready. So, he ordered me Pitocin (a synthetic hormone to start labor) - which ended up getting started at 1pm. At that point, Garrick had taken the kids home & it was just me. I could feel things getting started right away & within 30 min. I was having contractions every 2 min. I knew this wasn't going to take long.

Garrick came back with the kids around 4:30-5 & my labor was starting to REALLY pick up, as much as I had wanted a pain medicine free labor & delivery - I felt myself getting talked into the nurses persuasion of getting an epidural. Her reasoning's started sounding better by the minute (and contraction). However, things had picked up so fast - that, shortly after Garrick & the kids arriving, they had to leave - not because they had to, but because I was in such a rhythm with the contractions & having them there just wasn't good for my concentration.

While mentally searching through our childcare options, we decided to give our friend, John from Florida (who was living about 20 min. north in upstate NY a call), him & his mom agreed to come & sit with the kids while I delivered. Which was such a relief. Garrick took the kids to get dinner in the cafeteria & wait for John & his Mom. All the while, I was waiting for my Dr. to get there so that I could deliver. I was just about ready to start pushing & was being asked by my nurse to just hold on a little longer for my Dr. to arrive - such a difficult task. At that point, it was just me without any sort of pain relief, trying to breathe through each contraction & remember what those contractions were doing - "pressure", not "pain" :)

It was also during that time that I was reflecting on my faith. My mind had wandered to Jesus on the cross & the pain He endured - my pain couldn't have come close to His. I cried out, asking God for help, I wanted the pain to be over with. I had originally wanted to have a natural labor & delivery as some sort of small sacrifice for my children's salvation's. I am happy to say, that I succeeded in that mission.

So, my Dr. came in at 6:50pm, he didn't even change into scrubs, he just washed his hand & put on some sort of body apron - I delivered Baylee a few minutes later. It doesn't take long to push a baby out when you can feel EVERYTHING!

My Dr. put her up on me & I have to say... the moment felt surreal. Everything just didn't seem like it had happened. I was trying to put my mind around the idea that this little life who lived in me for 9 months was now laying on my chest - screaming her little head off, my body had felt at total ease. I know, it seems like the third time around, the experience shouldn't feel so much as it did - but with Aubree (although pain med free), it was not a good experience. Preston I had the epidural & couldn't feel much - I guess, this was the one labor that I had wanted to experience most. I mean, women used to deliver babies out on fields while working & women today still deliver naturally, and in far less ideal conditions... I wanted to do it also.

Right when Baylee entered the world, Garrick came rushing in, just in time to look at her. It was a good moment to know that he was there with her, while I was still being taken care of. I had the most wonderful nurse, Michelle who never left my side & took such great care of me during those last couple of hours. My Dr. was a wonderful support too, he encouraged me through the delivery portion & I don't know if most people would like his masculine approach of encouragement - but it's just what I needed to get the job done. After Garrick & I had a good 30-40 minutes of bonding time with Baylee, Garrick went and got Aubree and Preston. They were so excited & to my surprise, Preston fell madly in love with her! He's absolutely CRAZY about the baby... He held her & looks at her & says "cute" & "tiny". Whenever he sees her, he can't help but to smile... that reminds me of the other man in her life (her Daddy).

The kids & Garrick stayed with Baylee & me until about 9pm - it was so nice to all bond together. We felt complete & we all just felt so much joy.

Here is right before we left for the hospital...

 My Labor & Delivery room...

Me in the early to mid stages of labor, capturing some things in pictures... what else was I supposed to do, all by myself for 5 hours?
(other than taking some pictures, I also read some biblical literature out of the Book of Matthew - 9/21 is the Patron Day of Saint Matthew, I also watched a bit of news & texted/talked on the phone, played words with friends, etc.)

Her first moments with her Daddy...

Meeting her Big Sister Aubree & Big Brother Preston...

Pediatrician Annette (she was so wonderful!) evaluating her...

 My kids...
The next morning... After her Ultrasound & Tests, she slept well.
(I'll write more about what the Urologist told us at the end)
The kids hanging out in my room
(you can tell Garrick did Aubree's hair under his care!) :)
The hospital brought meals for Garrick & the kids too, so we always ate together

Going home day...
And we FINALLY named her as well!

Dad getting Baylee dressed to come home
(he's always done this with all the kids)
Her discharge weight 6 pounds 1 ounce... she's so TINY!!
At home & eyes open for once!! :)
Aubs is a proud big sister!

Ok, so after her testing her Pediatrician Urologist (Dr. Tennebaum), came in to discuss his findings. He did confirm 100% that she only has 1 kidney. There is no second kidney (unusable kidney) in a different area of her body - which is a great thing! That means she has no reproductive issues. It's strictly just the kidney thing. In addition to her having the Hydronephrosis of her solitary kidney, she also has Hydronephrosis of the Ureter. Basically her kidney doesn't drain fully & not only is it swollen, so is her ureter. He doesn't know what exactly is the issue (i.e. Reflux of the Bladder), so Baylee is now on daily antibiotics indefinitely & we're scheduled to go into his office where they have some state-of-the-art medical facility where she'll undergo some specific testing. He said something about a catheter & dyed fluid. He wants to know exactly where the fluid is going & if it's backing up, etc. It will be after those tests that we'll get some idea what needs to be done about her kidney (surgery, or whatnot).

Happy Birthday Aubree!!

Monday, September 19, 2011 Posted by Dana J. 0 comments

"But Mom! I look the same. The same as yesterday."

These were her first words yesterday morning (9/18), when I came into her room & said,
"Happy Birthday Aubree!! You're FOUR years old today!"

Ok... So, maybe I've been playing around with her head a little, joking that when she wakes up on her birthday, she might break her bed because she'll be soooooo big! Aubree's birthday is something we have been discussing now for weeks, it's exciting to talk about the one day that belongs to you, the one day that is only about you. Cute things she's been saying lately before she goes to bed, have been...
"I'm going to grow up Mom, but I'll always be YOUR kid"
or, "I'm growing up mom, but I'm STILL your kid"
"I'll NEVER leave you, I'll always stay with you" (which I promptly answer "you better!")
Oh, how I know as the years will go on, this will be spoken less & less, more likely, it'll turn a whole 180 degrees. :(

My favorite thing she says & I have to say... It more often comes in a time of need than anything else is:
"You're the best mom EVER".
I have to say, it tends to come at a defeated moment... At the end of a long day, where you're tired, FINALLY putting the kids to bed... and maybe feeling like you could have done more. Feeling like, you need a new day to make everything right, that went wrong.

I have to say, becoming a Mother is challenging. There are many down moments - moments of failure. Moments of "I should have..." or "I could have..." - moments where you regret your lack of patience or wisdom. I have to fight feelings of "wanting" to be selfish. Before children, it's easy to put yourself first - you have no one else who relies on you! In fact, I remember the evening of September 19, 2007, so clearly & how I felt. It was the first night home from the hospital with Aubree, she was about 36 hours old. I was beyond tired - I was physically beat from childbirth & had this tiny child who I could NOT make happy! I remember being hungry & just uncomfortable. I had just gotten her to take a tiny catnap, thinking I could actually eat a meal without cradling her. I had dished up my warm plate of food that my mom had prepared for us (I still remember exactly what the meal was.... Chicken breasts in a mushroom, wine sauce with wild rice & a salad), I had gotten myself a cool, refreshing glass of water, sat at the table & just before my first bite - Aubree started wailing. It was at that moment that I felt myself automatically choosing my child over my own needs. I got up, and chose to comfort her. It's funny, when someone relies on you that much...
You are just forced to be selfless.
It took that moment for me to realize that my life had completely, totally changed. It wasn't a monumental thing, it was just life. My new life.

I'm not saying that parents should ignore their own health, or needs for a child - and, I don't... It's just that love you have, it overtakes your own needs & wants. It's instinctual & after that initial instinct semi-wears off (compared to that initial extent), it's sometimes a struggle to choose the best for your child, over yourself on a daily basis. I guess, it's continually practicing a bit of selflessness & I struggle with it from time to time.

However, I wouldn't choose anything over this vocation of Motherhood. It has taught me a lot about who I am & where my weaknesses lie. My children help me to grow as a person (well, it shows me where I need to grow - the actual "growing" part is still a work in progress).
I am so grateful for Aubree & Preston. I'm grateful for who they are, and for what they have done for me, as a person.  I'm especially grateful for Aubree, she's my first child.... and I have to say, that first year of her life (as challenging as it was), was probably one of the happiest years of my life! I look back, and sometimes in moments of sadness, I can reflect on that time in my life & it just feels perfect; I felt so blessed. Between the love of Garrick, our new family & the joy of every new experience/milestone of Aubree's, all of our adventures in parenting... Wow! Becoming a parent has the most magical moments!

Since yesterday was Aubree's birthday... I should be writing about her, not me - although I'm always flooded with my own emotions during the kid's birthdays, reflecting on all the changes.

So... Aubree is amazing! I know every parent thinks their kid is amazing so of course I'm biased here, but Aubree is just a really, really good girl! She is so obedient, she has a great conscience, she is loving, sincere & compassionate. If we say no, she doesn't argue - she accepts her authority. I honestly don't think she has ever had one temper-tantrum out in public (seriously! Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Preston.... hahaha!). Of course she wants things at the store & whatnot and of course more often than not she's not allowed to get it, but she asks & then accepts the answer, even though you can tell she's saddened by the answer. She's reasonable & you can explain things to her; she gets it.

She LOVES imaginary play! She loves "making (stuffed) animals talk", building forts (we build one, almost every day), pretending to be our pet dog, a mommy, a chef, etc. She loves books, we read them often & now she's starting to "read" them too (well, memorize). She loves music & dancing, loves hide & go seek. Loves coloring & drawing pictures of our family. She loves playing dress up in costumes & also just dress-up for herself for the day. She dresses herself everyday & has even been picking out some of her own shoes & clothes at the store. She has her own style & she knows what she likes.

She is such a good big sister!! Honestly, she melts my heart with her love! She's selfless & giving. She just LOVES & ADORES Preston with all of her little heart. She'll give him things that she would rather not hand over. She is patient with him, and so helpful.... she tries to figure out why he's unhappy & always goes to his rescue. I feel so blessed to have Aubree as our firstborn, she has never displayed one ounce of jealousy - not one ounce. Even when we coo over Preston's achievements, she joins us! I'm really impressed by who she is as a person & she makes ME want to be a better person, she's very mature & admirable.

Anyway, I can see that I have already written far too much on here... I just wanted to pay tribute to my sweet, beautiful, loving little four-year old! I love her with everything I am. God knew what she would do to me & for me and He entrusted her little soul with me & I couldn't be more grateful.
I love you, my dear, sweet Aubree - you're a huge piece of my life!!! :)

Ok.... This is the night before her birthday, Garrick blew up all 30 of these balloons, she was in heaven! She LOVES balloons!! Oh & her four favorite colors are Orange, Blue, Pink & Red
(yes... she has 4 favorite colors, this is going to be a good year for her!)

Morning of.... (and, yes... Our bedroom does get this ridiculously bright every morning - darn these East-facing windows!) :)

Aubree never waits longer than 5-15 minutes before dressing herself for the day!

After all the fun, EARLY morning play, we went to an awesome Pancake restaurant, walked around a street fair, went to Toys R Us - so that she could pick out her OWN gift - and Skyped/talked on the phone with various family members. We then had dinner & of course cupcakes, birthday singing (I realized I'm the only one who actually sings the song... darn that non-singing Garrick!!), and then bed at last... What a long "Aubree Day" we had! :)

Almost that time...

Thursday, September 15, 2011 Posted by Dana J. 0 comments

Yesterday I was officially "full term" - 37 weeks. However, I still could potentially have anywhere from 3-4 weeks to go, based on when this little girl decides to exit.

I have yet to have that burst of "nesting" energy - to get everything ready, so instead I have been pushing myself to get a little bit done every day. It's been pretty miserable! I think my energy could have been here by now, but I'm battling a little virus, I'm hoping once it passes - I'll start packing bags & getting things lined up to be ready to go to the hospital.

I had two Dr.'s appointments on Monday. One was a specialized ultrasound to check on a detected issue with the baby. It turns out this little girl only has 1 kidney & that kidney is currently a bit sick. I've been praying that the kidney corrects it's issue, so we prevent any type of surgery. There is an extremely slight chance at this point, that it could happen, but my Dr. feels that surgery is most likely in the future at this point. So, we have a great Pediatrician Urologist lined up to be at the hospital upon delivery. He'll be doing an ultrasound on her whole pelvic region & running several tests on her, to be sure her kidney can function before we leave the hospital.

They also were able to tell me that she is head-down & in delivery position. She's 6 lbs 9 oz right now based on the ultrasound. I have no idea how they're able to know that! It's crazy. Directly after the ultrasound, I had a routine Dr.'s appointment with my OBGYN., I've gained 14 pounds total, which I'm totally ok with, because I know it's not easy getting any extra weight off after the baby comes! I go back again next week for another ultrasound, they want to see if there is any change in the baby's kidney.

I can not believe that this baby is almost here! I don't feel too prepared, at all! Yesterday I started washing the loads, upon loads of clothes I have for her - the clothes pictured below are only the newborn & 0-3 month clothes! I literally have 4 other huge boxes of clothes that will take her up to the age of 3. I have pretty much kept everything, plus Natalie has passed on Marian's old clothes. We unpacked a big box of newborn diapers we bought a few weeks ago & they look SO small compared to Preston's 2T sleeping pull-ups! The kids & I sat around looking at the tiny diapers yesterday, both of them were going "awe.... little baby", Aubree kept saying "they're so little!". And, of course I can't do any sort of organizing of the clothes while the kids are around - because they either like to look at ALL of them, or start trying them on. Anyway, I forgot how much I just LOVE the smell of baby detergent... It just makes you want to hug all the clothes! :)

In other, pretty BIG news... Aubree is about to be a FOUR year old!! On Sunday, she'll be 4! It really seems crazy to me. It makes me feel kinda old & also, it's a reminder to me that I've been a mom for four years, almost 5 - if you count the pregnancy, becasue even though you don't have the baby to physically take care of, you're still taking care of the fetus that's living inside of you.

Unfortunately, I feel like we've moved around so much & it always seems to be around Aubree's birthday - that this will be the 2nd birthday that we don't really have any family or friends for her to have a birthday party. So, we're going to try to make it as special as possible for her. We're going to spend tomorrow baking all her favorite desserts & then we're going to Chuck E Cheese for pizza & rides/games. We're going to get her favorite Ice Cream at Applegates & she's asked for a few VERY specific birthday presents - so, we'll see if she gets lucky enough to get those! :)

Anyway.... here are just a few pictures of our recently uneventful life. :) We haven't done much in the last couple weeks, because we've all had a bit of a lingering cold that's kept us around the house. But, I guess we should get used to this. Once winter is here, and it's just me + 3 kids, I don't think we'll be doing  too much of anything anyway! ;)

Rehobeth Beach, DE

Thursday, September 8, 2011 Posted by Dana J. 0 comments

Saturday we spent the day ON the beach in Delaware - it was VERY crowded with all the Labor Day vacationers (including ourselves). Our friends had an amazing beach house... almost right on the water. It was so beautiful, we spent the morning walking the boardwalk & we went out to breakfast. Then, we took the kids to the beach - they had so much fun!!

The main reason for our trip to Delaware was to see this little guy! This is Cole, and we just love him!! We came for his first birthday - we couldn't miss it!

Drinking Coffee & relaxing/playing in the morning...

A walk down to the water, where we saw Dolphins jumping in the waves.

Just hanging out on the beach....

(Garrick & I think Preston is a little skeptical of other kids - he wasn't so sure about Cole.... Poor Cole!)

Dancing in the water...

Preston looks like a grown boy....

Cole is wearing the same swim trunks his father wore 30+ years ago... so amazing! :)

Thank God for Dad's who can win their kids fair prizes! Each of the kids had something to take home after an evening walk on the boardwalk.
